Hello, I'm Josiah Wai
I am a PhD candidate in the Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering department at Princeton University in the fusion controls lab of Dr. Egemen Kolemen. My research is focused on developing control systems for fusion reactors, especially in relation to the difficult heat flux mitigation and exaust problems of tokamak divertors. I previously worked on showing advanced divertor capabilities exist for ITER, improving diagnostic usefulness in DIII-D, and am currently working on several control development scenarios at NSTXU and SPARC.
Before fusion research, I was an acoustics and vibration engineer for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and did a lot of hands-on engineering problem-solving. Much of this was aimed at reducing the acoustic signature of submarines, as well as repairing and maintaining the large rotating machinery onboard submarines and aircraft carriers.
In my free time I love hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, visiting national parks in a converted camper van, and all things outdoors!
